Tendon boots

Tendon boots are front boots that are fitted around the cannon bone. The protective layer runs all the way around the leg, except in the front, where it is open. As the name suggests, tendon boots offer protection to the tendons, which run down the back of the leg, and prevent injury that could be caused by the back legs striking into the front legs, especially during jumping. Tendon boots are favoured by jumping riders, as the shell protects the tendons and the open front encourages the horse not to knock his legs against the poles.

Tendon boots are arguably the most technologically advanced boot today, with several brands making use of carbon materials and ventilation to bring riders a boot that is highly protective, supportive, light and breathable. Some brands incorporate gel into the inside of the boot to improve shock absorbency. Tendon boots can be anywhere between R300 and R5,000 per pair.
