What made you start your business CHANGE OF TACK?
I worked for Western Shoppe, one of the biggest saddlery stores in South Africa, for 26 years. I worked in almost every department of Western Shoppe over that time. I started off in the front of shop in sales, which included rudimentary saddle fitting. I then ran the warehouse, which included looking after the branches and the sales reps. Then I moved onto running the wholesale department and doing all the procurement of stock. I was also involved in marketing and the website too. After all of that it was time for a change so I started my own business, CHANGE OF TACK.
Are you a horse rider yourself?
Yes – I have ridden my whole life. I started off at Glenfox with May Foxcroft, so was lucky to ride horses and ponies of every shape and size, and competed across the disciplines. Eventing became my focus until about seven years ago when my interest moved to dressage.
Do you have a horse of your own?
I have two. Adelprag Hubertus is a gorgeous long-legged 8 year old dark bay 17.1 hand Friesian/TB gelding. He is exquisite to look at but a very complicated and sensitive horse. He is currently at Elementary and I have had him for 4 years. Mossandi Rockstar is the complete opposite. She is a chunky 15.2hh chestnut WB mare. She is an absolute gem to work with and a pleasure to ride, I have had her for 3 months and she will go up to Elementary-Medium after lockdown.
What service does CHANGE OF TACK offer?
CHANGE OF TACK adds a new dimension to the second-hand saddle market in Southern Africa by not only selling saddles, but also buying, trading, leasing and renting saddles too.
CHANGE OF TACK offers saddle fitting services and advice on any saddles. I can check and advise on existing saddles or bring out a selection of my own if you are in the market for a new one. CHANGE OF TACK also has an extensive bit library from which bits can be rented or purchased – you really can try before you buy!
CHANGE OF TACK is thus an owner run private company and as mentioned I have 26 years of experience in the equestrian retail trade in South Africa. I have extensive knowledge of all things equestrian having competed in showjumping, eventing, showing and dressage for over 35 years. I am also a SANEF instructor.
What products does CHANGE OF TACK have?
Saddles – all brands and types (GP, dressage and jumping) – from the very affordable to the top of the range. CHANGE OF TACK also stocks saddle accessories too, such as stirrup irons, leathers and girths. And, as mentioned above, they also stock bits.
Where is CHANGE OF TACK situated?
Kyalami – Gauteng, but I do not have retail premises. I travel widely throughout Gauteng and into neighbouring provinces. I have also been to Zim and Namibia a number of times.
