AskHQ: Bars

Q: What are the bars?

A: It is easiest to think of the bars as the parts of the hoof that, rather than finishing the circle formed by the hoof wall, have turned inwards towards the centre of the foot at the angles of the heel. By doing this the bars are still able to take weight and support the heels and internal structures, but also allow movement of the back part of the foot. This means that they allow movement, whilst at the same time keeping the structure and shape of the foot intact. Bars are also vital for providing surface traction for horses.

The bars can be seen extending forwards from the angle of the heel alongside the frog. They follow the internal laminae down to the weight bearing surface. It can sometimes be difficult to see where the bars end and the sole begins in some cases, as the bar blends with the sole at the front border.
