ASKHQ: POWER TOOLS

Q: When having a dentist tend to your horse’s teeth, is it better if they use power tools or not? I’ve received very mixed opinions!

A: Firstly, it is very important to make sure that only a reputable and qualified dentist works on your horse’s teeth. The condition of a horse’s teeth can greatly affect their day-to-day comfort and therefore quality of life so regular, high-quality dentistry is a must. If it’s possible to float your horse’s teeth without power tools, then that option should definitely take first preference. Your dentist will be able to advise you if your horse’s teeth need power tools to be corrected. At the end of the day it comes down to each individual horse’s condition and what’s best for your particular horse. However, super results can be achieved through manual hand floating, without the need for power tools – and if this is a possibility, we would strongly advise that you go with this option.
