
WHAT FATIGUE DOES TO MOVEMENT

A tired horse does not simply perform the same movement with less enthusiasm. Fatigue can alter force production, coordination and stride-to-stride consistency, but it does not create one universal pattern.
Movement depends on more than strength
Every stride requires the nervous system to recruit muscles in the right sequence and at the right intensity. The horse must stabilise the trunk, control limb placement, absorb force and propel the body while continuously adjusting to speed, surface, balance, direction and the rider. Fatigue can reduce muscular power, but it can also affect proprioception, motor control and coordination.
The result may be less economical movement. A horse may lose stability, vary more from one stride to the next or adopt a different strategy to complete the task. What the rider feels as heaviness, loss of expression or a failure to stay together may therefore reflect reduced physical capacity, and an increased risk of injury.
What recent research found
In a 2025 study, researchers measured young Friesian stallions before and after standardised ridden exercise tests during an intensive ten-week training programme. Seven inertial sensors were used to examine stride characteristics, limb angles and upper-body movement.
The horses did not all respond in the same way. The researchers found individual changes in gait kinematics, with increased stride-to-stride variation in several measures under more fatigued conditions. Increased movement at the withers after exercise was a consistent finding, while many other expected changes were not uniform across the group.
That variability is an important finding. It warns against creating a social-media-worthy checklist that claims fatigue always shortens the stride, always causes asymmetry or always produces one particular feeling. Breed, age, training status, speed, exercise type and measurement conditions all influence the response. The study was also small: only 16 horses entered and four completed the full programme. Its findings are informative, but certainly not definitive.
Why quality matters
When coordination and force production deteriorate, continuing to demand the same technical task may change what the horse is practising. The movement may still be completed, but with altered timing, stability or limb loading. In that situation, more repetitions do not necessarily equal better conditioning.
This does not mean riders should stop at the first imperfect stride; learning is variable, and horses need progressive challenges. The useful question is whether quality returns after a brief pause or simpler exercise, or whether deterioration continues despite support. A transient mistake is different from a developing pattern of reduced control.
Observe trends, not one stride
Because fatigue responses differ between horses, repeated observations of the same horse are more useful than comparison with an imagined ideal. Video from a consistent angle, notes on the session, recovery time and awareness of footing can reveal trends that our memory misses over time.
NOTE: Persistent asymmetry, repeated stumbling, obvious lameness or a sustained change in performance requires veterinary investigation; fatigue should never become a convenient explanation for working through signs that could indicate pain or disease.
The central lesson is that when movement changes under load, the change deserves analysis from the rider. The horse may be showing us the limit of his present ability to produce that movement well and we should listen to that message to avoid injury.
