Fatigue is not confined to a horse who is blowing hard at the end of a session. It can appear much earlier, and far more subtley, as a loss of strength, coordination, consistency or willingness.
What do we mean by fatigue?
In ordinary equestrian conversation, we tend to recognise fatigue only at its most obvious: a horse is sweating, breathing hard and plainly unable to maintain the work. Exercise science uses the term more broadly. In exercise science, fatigue describes a reversible reduction in the capacity to produce force, power or the required level of performance. It may arise within the working muscles, through changes in energy supply and contraction, or within the nervous system, where the recruitment and control of those muscles become less effective.
It may be acute, developing within one session, or it may accumulate when repeated work is not matched by sufficient recovery. The latter does not necessarily produce a massive collapse in performance. It may first show up as a horse who takes longer to loosen, makes more mistakes, loses quality earlier, struggles to repeat an exercise or no longer feels quite like himself.
This is one reason fatigue is difficult to identify scientifically. There is no single conclusive marker that tells us, in isolation, that a horse is fatigued. Heart rate, blood lactate, gait measurements, behaviour, recovery and performance can all contribute information, but none should be treated as a universal fatigue test.
A recovered heart rate is not the whole horse
Heart rate and breathing are valuable observations, but they describe only part of the response to exercise. A horse’s respiratory rate may settle while his muscles, energy stores, tendons, nervous system and thermoregulatory mechanisms are still recovering. A horse who is no longer blowing is not therefore automatically ready to repeat the same effort.
The type of work matters too. For instance, a technically difficult schooling session, repeated jumping efforts, sustained collected work, fast work and exercise on demanding going do not create identical stresses. Two sessions of the same duration may impose very different loads, and two horses completing the same session may experience it very differently because of age, training history, conformation, fitness, health and skill.
The more subtle signs
Possible signs of reduced capacity include a loss of rhythm or balance, declining accuracy, reduced impulsion, increased stumbling, a greater number of poles, delayed responses, difficulty maintaining an exercise and a longer-than-usual recovery. Behaviour may change too, with a normally willing horse becoming reluctant, tense or unusually irritable.
None of these signs proves fatigue on their own. Pain, illness, poor saddle fit, unsuitable footing, rider factors and many other problems can produce similar changes in our horses. Yet, these signs do confirm that something has altered and deserves attention.
The most useful comparison for us to use when assessing for fatigue is often comparing the horse with himself. What does this horse normally feel like at this stage of a session? How readily does he recover from this type of work? Is today’s response an isolated fluctuation, or part of a developing pattern?
The practical point
Fatigue is not laziness. It is information about current capacity. Good training requires effort on the part of the horse and rider, but once quality is deteriorating, repeating the same demand may rehearse compensation rather than build strength.
The welfare-first response is not to assume that every difficult moment requires rest; it is to notice the change, consider the whole workload and decide whether the horse needs a simpler question, a longer recovery, a management adjustment or professional assessment.
