The 2025 RSA FEI Jumping Challenge – Leg 3 is happening this weekend at Kyalami Equestrian Park (25th–27th July), bringing with it one of the most unique and inclusive international showjumping formats in the sport.
But what exactly is the FEI Jumping Challenge — and why is it important?
A global competition based locally
The FEI Jumping Challenge was created by the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) to allow riders in developing or geographically isolated countries to compete in an international series without the need for overseas travel.
Riders from over 50 countries compete each year. All riders jump the same course design, with identical fence dimensions and time limits, in their home nation.
This makes it a truly global series, with results from countries like South Africa, Guatemala, India, Zimbabwe, and Jordan all compared on a level playing field.
How it works
-
Each participating country hosts three legs of the Challenge throughout the year.
-
Riders compete over a pre-set course, designed and approved by the FEI, and judged under FEI rules.
-
Courses are sent out centrally and must be built exactly to spec — ensuring that every rider, from Nairobi to Kyalami, faces the same test.
-
There are three height categories:
-
Category A: 1.20m
-
Category B: 1.10m
-
Category C: 1.00m
-
-
Riders’ two best scores from the three legs count towards their national and international rankings.
Why it matters for SA
South Africa has long been a strong contender in the FEI Jumping Challenge, and it’s an important developmental platform for riders who may not yet have the resources to compete abroad but still want to measure themselves against international standards.
It also encourages precision riding, horsemanship, and thoughtful training, since riders can’t ‘win with speed’ alone. Technical accuracy, clear rounds, and consistency are key.
And for many, this series offers their first taste of FEI competition, with real ranking points and global context, all from their home arenas.
