[dropcap]H[/dropcap]ousing the most comprehensive history of South African horseracing in the country, the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association of South Africa (TBA) Museum is a cultural gem that shouldn’t be missed. Situated in Gosforth Park, Germiston, the museum was built in 2009 by TBA members, and is a welcome addition to the TBA sales complex.
A visual journey
The museum showcase includes interesting artefacts, vintage books, catalogues and race cards. The tour takes you on a visual journey through the ages, with each decade themed after an iconic female figure. For example, Princess Diana commemorates horseracing in the ‘80s, alongside the music and personalities of the time, thereby providing an interesting perspective for visitors – so your parents and teachers will enjoy the visit as much as you will!
Photographic displays include images of famous Thoroughbred breeders and horses who made history. There’s even a film about the breed! In the museum cinema, you can watch a beautifully produced video of South Africa’s early racing legends, with original footage of horses like Hawaii, Colorado King and Sea Cottage. If you research your horse’s breeding before your visit, you might see his ancestors in action!
Video titles are updated according to the horse sale seasons, so you can look forward to something new from time to time; but of course, we’re happy to watch these amazing horses again and again anyway!
Get comfy
Spend as much time as you like visiting – comfortable seating is provided inside the museum, and there’s a restaurant on the premises for coffee or a light meal.
The TBA promotes and encourages the breeding and improvement of Thoroughbred horses and is committed to their care.
