South Africa’s toughest showjumping title is decided between the 1st and 4th October, with free entry for the first three days
The Toyota SA Derby returns to Kyalami Equestrian Park from 1 to 4 October for its 61st edition. First held in 1965 at Inanda Club, it has a reputation as the most demanding test in South African showjumping. Organisers describe the Derby track as 1200 metres long with 18 obstacles, virtually unchanged, despite the move from Inanda, since the event began.
Heather Mpofu, Event Director at Kyalami Park Club, says: “The Toyota SA Derby pushes horse and rider to their limits, showcasing what is possible through hard work, passion, and a deep respect for the sport” (LaLady Media, 2026).
More than one Derby
The weekend now reaches well beyond the showjumping classic. The programme includes a Micro Speed Derby, a Mini Derby, a Dressage Derby, a Compleat Horse competition, which carries a R20,000 purse, and much much more. The overall champion of the Toyota Ultimate 4×4 Series is also decided at this event, and the winners of the series walk away with a new Toyota Hilux D/C Legend.
Last year’s winners
Dominey Alexander and Capital Kollier took the series win in 2025, winning the Toyota SA Showjumping Derby Victor Ludorum and the Toyota Year of the Legend series title (Midrand Reporter, 2025). Rainer Korber won the South African Derby Championship title (Wanted, 2026).
The record for the most Derby wins belongs to Gonda Betrix, with six victories between 1967 and 1991.
Getting there
Entry is free from Thursday 1 to Saturday 3 October. Sunday 4 October is ticketed, with grandstand and VIP packages that include an after-party with live music. Food stalls, market stalls, Toyota vehicle displays and activities run alongside the competition
