Understanding lameness: Intro

Lameness is an abnormality of gait that is caused by pain and/or restriction of movement.

It’s very upsetting when your special pony is lame, particularly if you don’t know exactly what is wrong.

Over the next few days we’ll be looking at the most common causes of lameness in our ponies, and how they can be managed.

Here are the causes you can expect to read about over the course of this week:

  1. Suspensory or tendon inflammation
  2. Suspensory or tendon tear
  3. Synovitis of the joints
  4. Degenerative joint disease
  5. Fractures
  6. Deep digital tendonitis
  7. Hoof abscesses
  8. Navicular disease
  9. Laminitis

NOTE: If you notice anything unusual about the way your pony is moving, rather be safe and get them checked out by your vet.
