Common causes of lameness, Part 6

DEGENERATIVE JOINT DISEASE

Degenerative joint disease (DJD), often referred to as arthritis, affects most ponies and horses at some stage of their lives.

It is normally a slow developing chronic disease of the joint in which the joint surface (cartilage) wears down, resulting in pain and lameness.

Causes of arthritis:

  • Gradual wear and tear to the joint over years (most common)
  • Trauma to the joint

The best way to deal with arthritis is correct management.
