SUSPENSORY TEARS
It is possible to overload the suspensory ligament so much that it tears. Lameness can be mild to severe when this happens.
As with suspensory inflammation, dressage ponies seem to be more vulnerable to this type of injury.
When it heals, the new tissue is not as elastic as the original tissue and there is always a chance of re-injury if not properly managed with good farriery and proper conditioning work.
Depending on the severity of the tear, prognosis can be anything from guarded to excellent.
