Pony health check #1: Eyes

Your horse’s eyes should be bright and without any signs of swelling, redness, or anything leaking from the eye. Redness of the eye, leaking from the eye or swelling on or around it can be a sign of an eye issue. If you are concerned about your horse’s eye or notice anything unusual, contact your vet immediately. Eyes are very sensitive structures and must be treated quickly.

Another part of eye health that is often forgotten is the lining surrounding the eye. If you are concerned about your pony, gently pull down his lower eyelid to observe the colour of the lining of the eyelid. Salmon pink linings show that a healthy amount of blood is reaching the tissues. If the lining is paler than normal or yellowish you must contact your vet straight away, as this can be a sign of illness.

Note: Wash your hands straight away after touching your horse’s face to prevent any spread of infection to yourself or to other horses!
