With the 2015 Galencia Properties South African Derby on the horizon, we spoke to competitor, Samantha McIntosh about her plans for the event.
Samantha McIntosh, a 22-year old Chartered Accountant and Junior Lecturer at the University of Pretoria, completed her studies while competing full time as a showjumper. McIntosh has represented South Africa as a pony rider, a junior rider, a young rider and represented South Africa at the first Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, where she won South Africa’s first showjumping medal.
McIntosh’s top horse is Let’s Win, and they are currently ranked as the top combination in South Africa, which included winning the 2015 Nissan South African Outdoor Grand Prix. She also competes with Clara Juana and Katmandu – both young open horses who are performing well.
After Let’s Win suffered a near fatal accident, and courageously fought back to live, ultimately competing and winning at the top level, McIntosh and her sister felt that his story needed to be told. “We felt his story of determination could inspire the youth of today to ‘Dream, Believe and Win’, she said. Her sporting success has allowed her to represent South African sport and SASCOC on a few platforms, including addressing the International Olympic Committee on Youth and Sport.
Besides showjumping, McIntosh is a fitness fanatic, and if she’s not on her horse, she is competing in road running competitions. She invests the rest of her free time into her website, Let’s Win.
As we come together to celebrate 50 years of history, this year‟s theme for the Galencia Property South African Derby is The Midas Touch. Half a century since its inception, the 2015 celebration of this distinguished event is set to be a weekend of entertainment, fashion, food and wine, all in gold.
