Farewell, Muhtafal

A stallion with impressive presence
A stallion with impressive presence

Spring Valley Stud released the sad news of Muhtafal’s passing last week. The KZN stallion, by Mr Prospector and out of Polite Lady, died on 5 February at the age of 23 at the Spring Valley Stud, where he was living out his retirement days.

Short career

The American-bred Thoroughbred raced very lightly himself. Muhtafal had a total of three starts, during which he set two racing records, before sustaining an injury in 1995 that ended his short racing career. Muhtafal retired to Shadwell Stud where he started as a breeding stallion. Muhtafal was moved to South Africa in 1998 where he initially stood at Summerhill Stud and later moved to Spring Valley Stud. He is regarded as the most successful son of Mr Prospector to have ever stood in South Africa. He is sire to great racers, ranging from quick sprinters to athletic long-distance runners; he has produced 30 stake winners.

Good genes

Muhtafal’s offspring have inherited his speed, good conformation and physique, as well as his likeable temperament. Many of Muhtafal’s progeny have gone on to compete successfully in Dressage and Showjumping disciplines after retiring from the track. Muhtafal has been a truly influential stallion in the racing world and will always be remembered fondly.
