The Nissan Winter Classic  – which ranks as the top event in KwaZulu-Natal and one of the top five showjumping events in South Africa – is held at Durban Shongweni Club from 12 to 16 June.

One of the biggest attractions at the annual Nissan Winter Classic is the 6 Bar Competition. Held on Monday 15 June, the 6 Bar is an opportunity for riders to show off their showjumping skills while standing a chance to win in impressive prize pocket. And for the first time ever, the event will include a 6 Bar Competition for juniors in addition to the annual adult competition.

To win, horse and rider will have to clear a series of six fences which are lined up in ascending height. In the case of a tie, the fences are raised for subsequent rounds until a winner is declared.  This year the winner in the Adult category walks away with R15 000 while the Junior winner gets R10 000.

Last year’s winner was Lorette Knowles-Taylor riding 19 year old Nissan Nabab Forever. The duo not only won the title but went on to break 1.95m record by clearing an astounding 2m jump.

Entry fee is R250 per entrant, all of which will goes towards the South African Riding for the Disabled Association (SARDA), a non-profit organisation which provides horse riding as therapy and skill for children with special needs.
