A breeder of sires

Diamant passed away at the age of 31 in February of last year.

Diamant didn’t have an easy start to life; his mother, Venise des Cresles, passed away, leaving Diamant an orphan. Yet, this son of the famous Le Tot de Semilly went on to thrive. He competed at the top international level, qualifying for the Olympic Games, but, unfortunately, due to tendonitis, was unable to take part.

Diamant has been an excellent sire of sires, and whilst his absence will be felt, he has left us with many young stallions who are already making a sizeable impact in our sport. Just outside the top 10 on the WBFSH, we see his two sons, Emerald (x Carthago) and Diarado (x Corrado I) in 11th and 12th, respectively. Diarado is the number one eventing sire, and Emerald is breeding winners – just look at Mandato van de Neerheide. Both stallions are proving themselves to be producers of sires of both sporting horses and breeding stallions. Other phenomenal sons of Diamant include Dominator 2000 Z, Quickly de Kreisker and the 2023 Holstein licensing champion, Diamantado. His sons are sure to carry on his legacy.

Many of the studs in South Africa, both the larger and the more boutique studs, can be seen using either direct offspring of Diamant de Semilly or grandchildren in their breeding programmes. Diamant and his offspring are safe bets in the pursuit of producing showjumping superstars.

Diamant changed the shape of showjumping breeding internationally, and through the likes of his sons and daughters, he will continue to exercise his influence.
