Q: What is a wave mouth in horses?
A: A wave mouth is where the molar teeth do not align evenly in the horse’s mouth. This creates gaps between the upper and lower jaw, when the horse chews his food. This results in poor chewing, and thus a reduced surface area of the food when it enters the digestive tract proper, ultimately causing reduced digestion of the food the horse is eating.
If you have any concerns about your horse’s teeth it is vital that you contact your dentist. Dental issues in horses can cause serious problems, and are often overlooked until problems are relatively advanced A dental check-up every six months is considered optimal.
