ASKHQ: TEST DRIVING A BIT

Q: Why is ‘test driving’ a bit such an important part of the process?

A: When you have an idea of the horse’s anatomy, you can start to test-ride a certain bit. The anatomy can only tell you what does or doesn’t fit in the horse’s mouth; it cannot tell you the horse’s preferences nor the rider’s preferences.

While riding with another bit, your horse will let you know if the bit is an improvement or not. During the time you spend testing the bits with your bit fitter, you will notice which bit is most comfortable for the horse in terms of anatomy. After that you should have at least a 10 day trial to see if you are really happy with the bit – most of the time the horse will let you know if there is an issue!
