ASKHQ: FORWARD WHILE HACKING, BEHIND THE LEG IN THE ARENA

Q: My horse is really forward out hacking, but behind the leg in the arena. Why is that?

A: It’s likely about mental engagement, not just energy levels. Out hacking, your horse has changing scenery, new footing, and a natural forward draw — they’re alert and interested. In the arena, especially when the work is repetitive or too challenging, they may mentally disengage. To remedy this, try adding more variety to your schooling: poles, short canters, and transitions can help bring that forward energy back indoors. And, of course, make sure your horse gets to work outside the arena as often as possible to avoid any arena sourness. Hacks can also be great opportunities to school, so practice some of your arena work while out on a walk and see how that goes.
