What made you start your business Artful Memories Studio?
I’ve always loved the world of art but decided to join the equine world, career wise. While obtaining my Diploma in Equine Science, I worked at stud farms and local riding schools to gain experience. After working at a top stud for a while, I decided to move back to Johannesburg and back to my family and partner. I then got back into creating after a 5 year break! I realised that I could merge my passion for animals and art by creating original artwork and memorial pieces of beloved pets. I love sharing my art with the world as it’s completely free to appreciate a good artwork and I really feel it can bring a moment of joy to someone’s day. This is how Artful Memories Studio was born. I love creating art with our equine friends as models but I have recently gotten into doing wildlife as well!
Are you a horse rider yourself?
I am a horse rider myself. However; after a nasty fall a few years ago I have been struggling with back problems and haven’t been able to do much riding.
Do you have a horse of your own?
I have both a horse and a pony! My Thoroughbred’s name is actually Memories – hence the name of my business – and my cross breed pony’s name is Kid. They are best buds and inseparable. With my TB approaching 22 years old, he’s definitely starting to grey but is still the sweetest soul. You could stick a baby on him and he wouldn’t move. Kid, on the other hand, is a real character with everything happening on his terms! Together they sneakily try to raid the chicken feed if no one is around.
What type of equestrian art do you do?
I do both originals and commissions! I try to vary my mediums, both for my interest and the affordability aspect for my customers. My aim is to capture the essence of my subject matter and I mainly work in oils, charcoal and graphite; although I have dabbled in the digital art world.
Where are you situated?
I am based in Kempton Park but I can ship my artworks across the country!
Can people contact you during lockdown to place online orders?
