Alongside this weekend’s FEI Jumping Challenge, Kyalami Equestrian Park is proud to host the 2025 Cheval Liberté FEI Jumping Children’s Classics,a prestigious international series designed to nurture and showcase the next generation of talented young showjumpers.
What is the FEI Jumping Children’s Classics?
Launched by the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI), the Children’s Classics are part of a global initiative to create equal competitive opportunities for riders aged 12 to 14. The series is run in dozens of countries around the world, following a consistent format and set of rules, allowing children to compete internationally from home soil.
The aim? To provide a high-quality, internationally standardised competition that bridges the gap between grassroots jumping and elite-level sport, giving young riders a taste of FEI competition early in their careers.
Who can compete?
-
Riders aged 12 to 14 as of 1 January 2025
-
On ponies or horses (depending on national regulations)
-
With a clear focus on sportsmanship, technical ability, and fair play
The series has become a stepping stone for many of South Africa’s top junior athletes.
The format
-
Riders jump a course designed and standardised by the FEI.
-
They compete in two rounds over the weekend, judged under FEI rules.
-
The best combinations from each country are then ranked globally.
-
Successful riders may be eligible for international finals or invitations abroad (subject to performance and qualification).
Why it matters
The Children’s Classics aren’t just about the results; they’re about developing skill, responsibility, and international readiness in our young riders. For many of these young athletes, this is their first exposure to FEI rules, structure, and pressure, and it sets the tone for future success.
It also fosters international camaraderie and allows riders to see how they measure up on a world stage, without leaving their home country.
