This year celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the South African Derby. As the 2015 Galencia Property South African Derby approaches, plans get underway for one of the most prominent and eagerly anticipated events on the equestrian calendar. Riders, enthusiasts, friends and family come together from around the country to celebrate the sport, while enjoying the finest in food, music, fashion and parties.
What can you expect this year?
This year’s Derby is expected to be the biggest and best yet as we celebrate a true milestone in South African show jumping: The 50th Anniversary of the Derby.
Last year, Kyalami Park Club hosted one of the greatest events South African equestrian entertainment has ever seen, attended by over 5 000 people. This year, with Galencia Property proudly onboard once again as the headline sponsor, the event, the competition, the glitz and the glamour are set to be more spectacular than ever. Guests will have the option of general access grandstand seats, or the choice of three different tented VIP ticket options, complete with live entertainment and cuisine.
The highlight of the 4-day event is the Galencia Property South African Derby on Sunday 4th October. The Galencia Property South African Derby has become known for bringing together some of the world’s top players in show jumping. The 2014 Derby boasted top international show jumping judge Philippe Le Jeune Jnr, as well as top local course designer, Kate Launder. Show jumpers from around the country work the circuit all year to qualify for this competition, one of the toughest courses in South African show jumping.
The 18-obstacle, 1200m-course was won for the 2nd year in a row by Nicole Horwood in 2014. Riders like Nicola Sime-Riley and Lorette Knowles-Taylor come together to battle it out for the most prestigious show jumping title in South Africa. Young riders work their entire careers for an opportunity to show off their skills, and their steeds, at the South African Derby.
Don’t miss out
As we come together to celebrate 50 years of history, this year’s theme for Derby is The Midas Touch. Half a century since its inception, the 2015 celebration of this distinguished event is set to be a weekend of entertainment, fashion, food and wine, all in gold.
